KOSOVSKA MITROVICA Kosovo Election Commission member Nenad Rikalo has said that a total of four candidates have entered the race for northern Kosovska Mitrovica mayor. On Wednesday evening the number of candidates was three. Four candidates in repeat elections in KM The Citizen Initiative Srpska nominated Goran Rakic, the Citizen Initiative SDP Oliver Ivanovic, the Democratic Party of Kosovo's candidate is Florent Azemi, while Musa Miftari will run on the Democratic League of Kosovo ticket. Rikalo previously explained that GI SDP leader Oliver Ivanovic, who is suspected of war crimes and currently in custody in Pristina, can run for mayor. Rikalo told B92 that "Ivanovic's situation is not on the list of conditions which envisage that a person cannot be nominated." Elections in northern Kosovska Mitrovica will be repeated on February 23 because Krstimir Pantic, who was elected as mayor in November, refused to take office by signing a declaration on a document "which had markings of Kosovo's statehood." The situation in the town complicated further after the Independent Liberal Party candidate for mayor Dimitrije Janicijevic was shot and killed recently, and Ivanovic arrested. Andrijana Hodzic, who ran as independent candidate in November, decided not to join the race this time, saying in a statement for Tanjug that "the society has not reached the level of democracy in which a mayor may be someone other than a Serb or an Albanian."
