BELGRADE Three scenarios could lead to early parliamentary elections in Serbia, Marko Blagojevic, the Center for Free Elections and Democracy program director, told B92. These include the resignation of the prime minister, his cabinet facing a no-confidence vote in parliament, or an escalation of the crisis within the ruling coalition. Three scenarios for early elections in Serbia Blagojevic noted that he thought the third option to be the most likely. It would mean a crisis withing the ruling coalition that would be extended and sustained for a while, with a paralyzing effect on the work of the Serbian parliament. "It it were to be determined that this condition was chronic and irreversible, in that scenario, there would just be no way out of this situation other than to dissolve parliament and hold early elections. Conditionally speaking that means that the Progressives would have to withdraw their support to the Dacic government and exclude themselves from the work of the ruling coalition," said Blagojevic. This analyst added that he thought that, if early elections took place, this would be the road leading to them, "because it is the position of the prime minister, whom elections would obviously not suit at this time, that they are unnecessary." "It is therefore difficult to expect him to resign," he concluded. Some Belgrade newspapers have been reporting that Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic could announce early parliamentary elections in late January. In that case, the voting would be held concurrently with early local elections in the city of Belgrade, on March 16. (Tanjug, file) B92
