BELGRADE The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will propose setting up joint representative offices to states in the region, Ivan Mrkic has confirmed. The foreign minister told the Vecernje Novosti daily that the initiative was an effort to reduce the costs associated with running separate diplomatic missions abroad. Serbia proposes joint embassies to neighboring states According to the report, contacts have already been established with Skopje, Podgorica, Sarajevo and Ljubljana about possible joint diplomatic missions in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Mrkic said that an agreement could be reached by the end of this year. "We are close to an agreement with the Macedonians and Montenegrins," he said. According to Mrkic, Serbia is carrying out the plan for expanding the network of diplomatic and consular missions, but will offer all interested countries an opportunity to join. "That would reduce costs, while at the same time enabling the states in the region to be more present and visible in all parts of the world, and facilitating their joint entry to third markets," Mrkic said. He noted that the Scandinavian model proved very successful in Tokyo, for example, where one building contains offices of diplomats from over 15 countries of Latin America. Serbia plans to open three embassies this year- in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Ghana and five diplomatic offices in Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Vietnam and Cambodia, and these are very destinations in which the Scandinavian model could take root.
