BELGRADE President Tomislav Nikolic said on Monday the completion of the South Stream pipeline project was of extreme importance for the Serbian economy. It would promote the country into an important economic figure in the Balkans and all of Europe, Nikolic believes. The construction of the South Stream section through Serbia will begin on November 24. The Russian side suggested that three documents be signed at the start of the work, an agreement on gas transport through Serbia, an agreement on funding the Serbian share of the project and a special agreement with the Serbian government. South Stream is one of the largest projects in Europe, Miller said, thanking Serbia on hard work put in to resolve all issues related to the start of construction. He commented on other projects by saying that some misunderstanding had occurred in dealings with the Serbian government concerning NIS, but that he hoped they would all be cleared. Miller and Nikolic discussed also new projects NIS, which is owned by Gazprom, intends to complete in Serbia and the region, the statement says. The construction works will be carried out by Serbian companies, announced the government of Serbia. The building of additional legs of the pipeline, leading towards Macedonia and Republika Srpska, was discussed at the meeting as well. Options were also considered for the repayment of old debts, and it was concluded that the solution to this matter must be found by year-end.
