BELGRADE The IT sector offers great potential for economic development "and the government plans to seize that chance with the help of the world's biggest IT companies." This was heard during a meeting in Belgrade between Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, his deputy Aleksandar Vucic, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. PM, his deputy receive outgoing Microsoft CEO Ballmer, who in August announced he would step down from his role as CEO within 12 months, arrived here on Sunday night. "The Serbian government identified the development and growth of the IT sector as one of the main economic priorities, as that very sector could be impetus for the country's economic recovery. Serbia has huge potential in that domain," Dacic was quoted as saying in a government press release. Steve Ballmer said he was "very satisfied with the talks he had with government officials, partners and clients." "In Serbia, we are cooperating with local companies, creating new partnerships, and developing new technologies as part of the Microsoft Development Center whose solutions are used by millions of people worldwide," Ballmer said. At the meeting with government officials and members of the National Council for Economic Recovery, "it was estimated that the global IT industry grows 60 percent faster than the rest of economy, while in Serbia this sector outperforms the rest of economy by almost 200 percent." As far as the IT sector is concerned, Serbia's main advantages are competent workforce, good infrastructure, strategic position and the government's backing to this industry, Tanjug reported. Microsoft established its development center in Belgrade in 2005, one of the first in this part of Europe, it was underlined during the meeting.
