KRAGUJEVAC The town of Kragujevac is remembering on Monday the thousands of Serb civilians slaughtered there by the occupying German forces on October 20 and 21, 1941. The victims - among them hundreds of students and teachers of a local high school, the 1st Kragujevac Gymnasium - are honored each year in the traditional pacifist gathering, "The Great School Class", held at the town's Sumarice Memorial Park. Executed students and teachers commemorated in Kragujevac President Tomislav Nikolic was in his hometown today, taking part in the ceremonies, where he said that the crime must not be forgotten or allowed to repeat ever again. The president said that he was glad the commemoration was also attended by German Ambassador to Serbia Heinz Wilhelm, "who understands very well why his presence in Sumarice today is necessary." The Great School Class started with a commemoration and wreath-laying ceremony. Alongside Nikolic, wreaths were laid by Kragujevac Mayor Veroljub Stevanovic, a delegation of the 1st Kragujevac Gymnasium and officials of the government, the Serbian Armed Forces, the Alliance of Associations of the National Liberation War Veterans of Serbia (SUBNOR) and other veterans' organizations. Wreaths were also laid by the ambassadors of Germany, Israel, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Belarus, and officials of the embassies of Russia, Palestine and Slovakia. The Nuremberg trials accepted that around 7,000 civilians were executed in Kragujevac in the space of two days in October 1941 by the occupying German forces. But modern research revised this number to 2,792 victims - those whose names, date and place of birth, and occupation have been determined. Among the thousands of civilians rounded up and killed during October 20 and 21, 1941, were the students and teachers of the high school - 270 children, the youngest only 11 years old.
