NEW YORK Saudi Arabia has given up its status of non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council a day after it was voted in. The country's Foreign Ministry said that the decision was a protest motivated by the “inability of the United Nations to offer real participation in resolving military conflicts," Itar Tass reported. Saudi Arabia refuses non-permanent UNSC seat The ministry said that the Council "failed to fulfil its duties toward Syria," and that the Syrian president was "continuing to kill the people without punishment." Saudi Arabia also accused the Council of being unable to solve the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and remove weapons of mass destruction "from the whole region of the Middle East." Previously, human rights groups criticized the decision to vote Saudi Arabia and Chad in as new non-permanent UNSC members.
