Serbian citizens top asylum seekers' list in Germany

Serbian citizens filed in August the highest number of applications for asylum in Germany, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior has announced.

BERLIN Serbian citizens filed in August the highest number of applications for asylum in Germany, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior has announced. It cited the latest data by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, according to which Serbian citizens submitted 1,170 asylum requests last month. The data show an upward tendency in the number of asylum requests from Serbia, the release noted. Serbian citizens filed 525 applications for asylum in June this year, 957 in July, and 1,170 in August, thus going up from the third position in July to the first spot in August. The data related to "citizens of Kosovo, which are analyzed separately from Serbia," Tanjug said, showed they lodged 470 applications for asylum in August - "and held the sixth place- after Serbia, the Russian Federation, Syria, Macedonia and Afghanistan." When it comes to citizens of Kosovo, there has also been an upward trend in the number of asylum requests from 228 in June, then 412 in July, and 470 in August. "In the period from January to August this year, Serbian citizens were ranked third given the total number of applications, while Kosovo was ranked ninth," said the German authorities, Tanjug reported. In that period, the Russian Federation accounted for the highest number of asylum applications - 12, 672, then Syria - 6,549 and Serbia - 4,840, while Kosovo held the ninth place with a total of 1,916 applications for asylum. All in all, Germany has seen a rise in the number of asylum requests, with 9,052 having been received only in August, which reflects a year-on-year leap of 81 percent. When it comes to the total number of bogus asylum seekers coming from Serbia to the EU, the chairman of the Serbian government's commission tasked with monitoring the visa-free regime with the European Union, Gen. Nenad Banovic, told Tanjug on Monday that the country had taken all measures to ensure a considerable fall in the number of asylum seekers, adding that their number was minimal in all countries, except Germany which did not abolish benefits for asylum seekers.
