BELGRADE Police Director Milorad Veljovic called a press conference in Belgrade and gave his full support "to the people who spent a year working on the Kolubara case." Veljovic spoke on Monday to say that the former director of the coal mining basin, Nebojsa Ceran, and businessman Radoslav "Kene" Savatijevic were arrested for abuses related to expropriation of land in Vreoci, western Serbia. "Police work is not influenced by politics" The high-ranking Serbian police official told reporters that the police worked in accordance with the law, and that politics "neither should nor can affect the Criminal Police Directorate." "This is further evidence that the police are doing their job professionally, in accordance with the law and in cooperation with the prosecution," said Veljovic. He explained that Savatijevic was able to, "through abuses of the responsible parties at Kolubara, especially Director Nebojsa Ceran," obtain an unlawful material benefit, "which is currently in excess of one million euros." Veljovic said that a contract between Kolubara and Savatijevic appraised the value of his expropriated property and assets at around EUR 3.5 million, but that additional expert probe established the real figure to be about EUR 670,000. The difference is more than EUR 2.7 million, Veljovic underlined. He said that by law, the expropriation process applies to persons who have been residents of a relevant municipality for at least three years, while Savatijevic became a resident two days before he received advance payment in the amount of 35 percent of the total assessed value of his property. Asked to comment on a statement made on Monday by Democratic Party (DS) leader and Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, that the arrest of Nebojsa Ceran - a DS official - was "absurd and ridiculous," Veljovic said that "there is no need for anyone to lecture the police on whether something is absurd or not." "The police are working in accordance with the law, and if this is not in somebody's interest, that's not the problem of the police. The police works exclusively in the interest of the people and the public. No one should be putting pressure on us, either directly or indirectly, or in any other way," said Veljovic. Ceran, Savatijevic and five other suspects are currently being held in 48-hour custody, after which it they will be brought before a judge of the Higher Court in Belgrade.
