BELGRADE France's Minister Delegate for European Affairs Thierry Repentin voiced confidence that the beginning of Serbia's EU talks would not be brought into question. But he warned that Serbia should not waste time, but rather continue to implement the obligations it had taken on. French official: Serbia should not waste time The beginning of the talks has been set for January at the latest, Tanjug noted in its reprot. In June, the European Council actually delivered the decision to open the entry talks in January 2014 at the latest. France backed Serbia's candidacy, which it deems legitimate. Actually, we thought that the negotiations could start earlier- this year, Repentin told Tanjug on Monday. There is no reason for that agreement, which was reached in June, to be called into question at a European Council meeting in December, he said. In the meantime, Serbia should take advantage of every opportunity for further progress along the EU path, including the Brussels deal implementation, Repentin underscored. Every step forward will be an argument for Serbia's friends, including France, to prevent any unpleasant surprises in December, although, I repeat, there is no reason for unpleasant surprises, he said. Asked if it is possible that Germany, whose parliament had put forward very harsh conditions for Serbia's further progress on the EU path in June (in the eve of the EU summit), blocks the decision on the start of negotiations should it find that Serbia has not met all the demands, Repentin said that with 28 countries engaged in the dialogue, no country would stand alone and assume responsibility for cutting the process short. One should be an optimist, he said. The French minister welcomed the appointment of the lead negotiator for Serbia's accession talks with the EU, noting that, despite the government reshuffle, Serbia is not wasting time. Repentin said that the coming into force of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) on September 1 represents a new stage in Serbia's EU integration and a step forward towards membership. The EU is open to Serbia, but it has great expectations. Serbia should not stall with its profound structural reforms in the field of economy, judiciary, the rule of law, Repentin said.
