Belgrade most developed region, 23 others "devastated"

BELGRADE The Belgrade region is the most developed in Serbia, as it has GDP above the national average, as 23 more local self-governments enjoy the same status. However, 23 others are being categorized as "devastated areas". Their development level is below 50 percent of the average. Thus, only the Belgrade region falls into the developed category as its GDP figure is above the national average, while the regions of Vojvodina, Sumadija and Western Serbia, South and Eastern Serbia, as well as Kosovo and Metohija are in the underdeveloped category with the GDP below the average. The 23 local self-governments have GDP figures above the national average: Backa Palanka, Belgrade, Beocin, Vrbas, Vrsac, Zrenjanin, Kanjiza, Kragujevac, Lajkovac, Lapovo, Nis, Novi Sad, Pancevo, Pecinci, Pozarevac, Senta, Sremski Karlovci, Stara Pazova, Subotica, Topola, Uzice, Cacak and Sabac. Serbia has 35 local self-governments with the level of development ranging from 80-100 percent of the national average. There are 41 under-developed local self-governments with the level of development from 60-80 percent of the national average. Forty-six local self-governments registered the development level below 60 percent of the average. Therefore, they are considered under-developed. Within this group, 23 self-governments have been declared devastated areas as their level of development is below 50 percent of the national average. The devastated areas are: Babusnica, Bela Palanka, Bojnik, Bosilegrad, Varvarin, Vladicin Han, Golubac, Zagubica, Krupanj, Kursumlija, Kucevo, Lebane, Mali Zvornik, Medvedja, Mionica, Prijepolje, Rekovac, Svrljig, Sjenica, Surdulica, Trgoviste, Tutin and Crna Trava. The Serbian government adopted a decree on making a single list of regions and local self-government units for 2013 taking into account their development, which classified regions into two groups, local self-governments into four groups, and defined devastated areas.

The regions were divided into categories based on the GDP figures per capita in comparison to the national average, reads the latest issue of the Official Gazette.

Thus, only the Belgrade region falls into the developed category as its GDP figure is above the national average, while the regions of Vojvodina, Šumadija and Western Serbia, South and Eastern Serbia, as well as Kosovo and Metohija are in the underdeveloped category with the GDP below the average.

The 23 local self-governments have GDP figures above the national average: Bačka Palanka, Belgrade, Beočin, Vrbas, Vršac, Zrenjanin, Kanjiža, Kragujevac, Lajkovac, Lapovo, Niš, Novi Sad, Pančevo, Pećinci, Požarevac, Senta, Sremski Karlovci, Stara Pazova, Subotica, Topola, Užice, Čačak and Šabac.

Serbia has 35 local self-governments with the level of development ranging from 80-100 percent of the national average.

There are 41 under-developed local self-governments with the level of development from 60-80 percent of the national average.
