The number of marriages and divorces in Serbia in 2012 was down compared to the year before, according to the data published by the Statistical Office.

BELGRADE The number of marriages and divorces in Serbia in 2012 was down compared to the year before, according to the data published by the Statistical Office. A total of 34,639 marriages were registered last year, a 3.3 percent drop compared to the 2011 total of 35,808. The average age of the newlyweds was 30 among women and 33 among men. The average age at the time of the ceremony was 28 for women and 30 for men. Homogenous marriages between spouses of the same nationality were the most prevalent at 91 percent, reads the release. Based on education, the majority of marriages (65 percent) includes spouses of equal education; these are followed by marriages where the bride has a higher education level than the groom (20 percent), while the situation is reversed in only 15 percent of marriages. Divorces were down to 7,372 last year, from 8,251 the year before. The average age at the time of divorce was 39 for women and 43 for men. The average duration of a marriage ending in divorce was slightly longer -12.9 years, up from 12.7. In 2012, 54 percent of marriages which ended in divorce involved children and lasted between five and nine years. Of these, custody of the children was awarded to the mother in 42.5 percent of the cases and to the father in 7.9 percent, while 3.1 percent of divorcees got shared custody. In 2012, 54 percent of marriages which ended in divorce involved children and lasted between five and nine years. Of these, custody of the children was awarded to the mother in 42.5 percent of the cases and to the father in 7.9 percent, while 3.1 percent of divorcees got shared custody.

The number of marriages in Serbia was in a slight decline between 2002 and 2012. Last year, there were five marriages for every 1,000 people, compared to six ten years before.

Meanwhile, one divorce was registered for every 1,000 people in 2012, same as ten years earlier.
