BELGRADE "Definite steps forward" have been made in the fight against corruption in slightly less than a year that the current government has been in office. That made the process "irreversible," believes Transparency Serbia Program Director Nemanja Nenadic. "No going back in fight against corruption" But he also added that "a system is yet to be established which would make the fight independent of anyone's political will." "When we talk about selectivity in the fight against corruption, we have a government made up of several parties, where the position of the biggest party is the easiest, because they had not been in power for a long while, so their members were not in the position to be corrupt even if they wanted to," Nenadic told Tanjug in an interview, and added: "They are naturally predisposed to making the fight against corruption their priority, because it offers them a lot of material against those who were in power until recently and against their own coalition partners." Still, the government should not be the one deciding who will be prosecuted and when, because corruption cannot be combated efficiently without a prosecutor's office which can decide independently which cases to open, he noted. "The most important thing is that we do not end up in a situation where the state has to pay compensation to detainees because of poorly constructed indictments or detention without grounds," said Nenadic. In his opinion, the fight against corruption has gained so much traction that is has become irreversible, and the government now could not backtrack now even it wanted to without losing substantial public support. "Also, political parties have been more or less unaffected by the fight against corruption, because a review of financial reports from the last election campaign still has not been completed, nor have any judgements been passed down despite the noted irregularities," Tanjug quoted him as saying. Nenadic warned that from the aspect of implementation of anti-corruption legislation,"it would be very harmful if a new election was called before the review of financial reports from the last one was completed."
