LUXEMBOURG Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said on Monday that he hopes that the Council will make a positive decision on Serbia on Tuesday. He made the statement ahead of the Council of Ministers meeting in Luxembourg, adding that the European Union enlargement process must continue. Swedish FM "hopes for positive decision on Serbia" "We have a long-term responsibility to the Western Balkans, and it is vital it is honored," Bildt told reporters upon his arrival to attend the Luxembourg meeting that will bring together the 27 foreign ministers of EU member states on Monday and Tuesday. Asked whether he expects a positive decision on a date for the start of Serbia's EU accession talks, Bildt briefly said yes. The Swedish foreign minister stressed that the fact that certain countries are asking for the enlargement process to slow down or to stop should not influence the decision that is to be made. The European Union is a strategic body that does not make any strategic decisions for short-term aims, the minister said, adding that the European enlargement is one of the most successful political processes, which has brought peace and prosperity to the region. On Monday, the ministers will deal mainly with topics unrelated to the enlargement process, but the date for the beginning of negotiations with Serbia will be touched on as well, though in an informal vein. The date for Serbia is officially on the agenda for Tuesday, and it is expected that the Council will adopt relevant conclusions as early as tomorrow by noon and that these will be adopted at the summit of EU heads of state and government on Friday.
