BELGRADE Serbia's First Deputy Prime Minister and SNS party leader Aleksandar Vucic has stated that "people in Serbia do not want elections." Furthermore, he said on Friday, "it is important that there is a kind of national consensus, because for the first time people think that Serbia is going in the right direction, even the voters from the opposition." Vucic says "citizens do not want elections" "I do not think that it is important to people how many MPs or ministers a party will have. It is much more important what we can do," Vucic told Belgrade-based daily Blic, adding that a thorough government reshuffle is to take place. Vucic said that the reshuffle will not only refer to 19 ministers, but also to state secretaries, assistants, deputies, public services, public companies. As he put it, Serbia has serious problems with the functioning of public companies and this is impossible to hide. Some directors of these companies will also be dismissed, he said. Speaking about the economic situation, Vucic said that unpaid debts from the past are due now, adding that the public debt had been constantly increasing. "Supposedly we lived stable and well, but we were actually borrowing from year to year and selling Eurobonds several times a year to maintain liquidity," the deputy prime minister said, and added that at the same time, economic activity was at its very lowest. We should now pay public debt, huge fiscal deficits, foreign trade deficits, lack of production, minimum export, he pointed out. Vucic also announced "a systemic and fundamental" reform of the state administration. This cannot happen soon, but it has to be finished in a year of two. We should also see what to do with the restructuring of public companies and subsidized firms, Vucic concluded. (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
