ISTANBUL Turkish riot police have used tear gas and water cannons to quash a peaceful protest against demolition of trees in a park in downtown Istanbul. The Dogan news agency says several protesters were injured when a wall they were climbing collapsed during a police chase, the AP has reported. Turkish police break up Istanbul park protest Police moved in at dawn Friday to disperse the crowd on the fourth day of the protest against a government plan to revamp Istanbul's main square, Taksim. The protesters were demanding that the square's park, Gezi, be protected. Numerous Istanbul citizens are against the square reconstruction project and construction of new buildings which will destroy all 600 trees in the only park in downtown Istanbul. The citizens and activists have been “guarding” the park since Monday when bulldozers arrived. They are supported by opposition MPs. The protesters claim the reconstruction is illegal and they have clashed with police on several occasions. The park, built in 1940, has been gradually shrinking due to construction of luxurious hotels. Istanbul has a population of 15 million and it is ruled by the conservative Islamic party. Officials claim that the trees will not be cut down but relocated to other green areas. The reconstruction should be completed by the end of June.
