BELGRADE Serbia has had good intentions toward the EU but Brussels has taken advantage of it by setting conditions that no country has ever had to fulfill. This is according to Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica. DSS leader: EU asking Serbia to renounce part of territory He said that Serbia had been asked what no country had been asked – to destroy its statehood and renounce a part of its territory. “If the EU had informed Serbia at the very beginning of the EU integration that would not join the EU as a whole country but that it had to renounce Kosovo as an inalienable part of its territory, then it would have basically been a fair attitude and nobody could say that they abused our trust,” Kostunica wrote in a text for Frankfurt-based daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He added that a turning point for redefinition of relations between Serbia and the EU was 2008 when the EU and Albanian separatists coordinated declaration and recognition of Kosovo’s independence which grossly violated UN Security Council Resolution 1244, UN Charter and Helsinki Final Act. The DSS leader that the essence of the new relation between Serbia and the EU was the fact that Serbia was offered a possible EU membership as an award “but that award is only possible if Serbia accepts to be the first country that has voluntarily renounced a part of its territory”. “This is a unique historical situation that the EU is imposing on Serbia because there have been numerous examples of capitulations of certain states so far but there has been no example that a state is asked to destroy its statehood, as Serbia is asked to do with its institutions in Kosovo,” he explained. Kostunica stressed that Serbia should change the pattern by declaring political neutrality in order to “stop the agony which is threatening to destroy the country”. According to him, Serbia as a politically neutral state should cooperate with the EU, primarily economically, and have good relations with the Union. “I think that it is mutual interest to stop this agony of Serbia because it is threatening to destroy Serbia and it will not lead it in the EU,” the DSS leader pointed out. He underscored that it was clear that the EU would not change its attitude and policy toward Serbia “for numerous reasons” and that it would continue to use the policy of force.
