Verdi's Aida performed in open theater at Viminacium

Aida, Giuseppe Verdi's operatic masterpiece, was performed at the Roman amphitheater at the Viminacium archaeological park near Kladovo in eastern Serbia.

KLADOVO Aida, Giuseppe Verdi's operatic masterpiece, was performed at the Roman amphitheater at the Viminacium archaeological park near Kladovo in eastern Serbia. The spectacle, which was part of a national program of celebrations of 17 centuries of the Edict of Milan, took place before 2,200 visitors including Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and his wife, other high-ranking officials, public figures and representatives of the diplomatic corps. Introducing the opera, Varricchio said Aida was made to be performed at Viminacium, a place which brings together Italian and Serbian culture, at a time when the world is celebrating 200 years of Verdi's birth. Verdi's best known work, a story of Ethiopian princess Aida who is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt, where she is torn between her love for military commander Radames and Ethiopia, was directed by Ognjan Draganov, guest artist from Bulgaria. The role of Aida was played by Jasmina Trumbetas Petrovic, Egyptian princess Amneris by Jelena Vlahovic, and Radames by Italian tenor Francesco Anile. The cast also included Elia Fabian, Ivan Tomasev, Stefan Pavlovic, Nenad Cica and Ivanka Rakovic-Krstonosic. They were accompanied by the National Theater choir, ballet company and orchestra, conducted by Ivan Kozuharov from Bulgaria. Over 250 performers wore luxurious, unique costumes designed by Milanka Berberovic, on a stage which reports said "can compare with the world's best open air theaters." (Tanjug) Tanjug

Introducing the opera, Varricchio said Aida was made to be performed at Viminacium, a place which brings together Italian and Serbian culture, at a time when the world is celebrating 200 years of Verdi's birth.
