BELGRADE It is clear that nobody in Serbia had toxic or cancerous milk and that it was a political and media affair, Agriculture Minister Goran Knezevic has said. “Farmers suffered the biggest damage, the poor ones who only have a few cows and provide for their families with milk production,” he told daily Vecernje novosti. There was no toxic milk in Serbia, minister claims “Even though aflatoxin appeared in all the countries of our climate zone in slightly higher concentrations, only in Serbia a scandal was made out of it with bad consequences for the economy and citizens,” Knezevic pointed out. He noted that “political motives of the Democratic Party (DS) and the current Vojvodina government are clear”, as well as motives of individuals “who work in the interest of the import lobby, their own personal gain and against interest of domestic producers”. “The milk market has stabilized as soon as buyers realized that there is no danger of consuming milk and that it was a fabricated affair. Aflatoxin levels depend on many factors, from the field to the table, and its increased presence in extreme climate conditions, like we had last summer, cannot be prevented with a single campaign but systematically and with long-term measures,” the minister pointed out. Vojvodina Executive Council Deputy Chairman Goran Jesic said on Monday that the latest analysis had shown that dairy products in Serbia were “catastrophically bad”. On the other hand, the Agriculture Ministry has stated that milk is safe because aflatoxin levels were below 0.5 micrograms per kilogram. Commenting on the Brussels agreement reached by Belgrade and Pristina, Knezevic expressed hope that Kosovo Serbs would respect interests of the state and nation after the initial emotional reaction and that they would accept the implementation of the agreement.
