BELGRADE The EU-brokered agreement between Belgrade and Pristina must not fail, Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Rasim Ljajic has said. He underscored that the ruling coalition had passed a test of unity on the Kosovo issue. Deputy PM: Belgrade-Pristina agreement must not fail Ljajic told Tanjug that now that such a major political deal had been reached, it would be completely unacceptable to think that the government did not have mechanisms to implement it and that the deal might fail. He underlined that now it was a priority to find the smallest common denominator through dialogue with Kosovo Serbs and a way to continue with what we had started, i.e. begin implementing the deal on the ground as soon as possible. “It would be very important to start implementing that deal, primarily because of the protection of the security and rights of Kosovo Serbs, regardless of where they live. That is much more and more important than whether we will be granted a start date for (EU accession) talks,” the deputy PM said. Asked whether a deal on the implementation plan would be reached soon, Ljajic said he could not say, but that there was really no alternative to that plan. “If such a major political deal has been reached, then it would now be superfluous to consider the possibility that it might not be implemented, despite all difficulties that we expect in the implementation process,” he said, adding that the talks aimed at harmonizing the text about the implementation would be continued. “Internal consultations are being held, we want to arrive at a document which will be realistic and workable,” Ljajic pointed out.
