BELGRADE Serbian president's advisor Marko Djuric said on Sunday that Serbia has prevented Kosovo from getting a UN seat by reaching an agreement in Brussels. According to him, Serbia has ensured safety and security for Kosovo Serbs and “legalized Serbian institutions” in the eyes of the international community. “Agreement will prevent Kosovo from getting UN seat” “With this agreement we have received a permanent guarantee that Serbia does not have to accept Kosovo’s UN membership, that it will not be forced to recognize its independence, that we have control in a series of areas from the beginning until the end. It also secured much more for Serbs south of the Ibar River,” he told Belgrade-based Prva TV. Djuric noted that the agreement did not allow the presence of Kosovo’s security forces in northern Kosovo. According to him, this will help Serbs feel safe. “Nobody, from Catalonia to Basque Country, has managed to get what we have. We did not let them join international organizations and we will create institutions that will be controlled by Serbs,” the advisor explained. He also added that Serbia would have more powers in the education system, health system, public information and spatial planning. Djuric pointed out that Serbia would not stop to invest and help Kosovo Serbs. He said that the Belgrade negotiating team had made great progress in the last two round of the talks and that nobody would have accepted the agreement if it had been the initial, eight-point version that “did not offer anything to Serbs”. “I am proud of the way we approached the negotiations. We have been given a chance and it is up to us whether we will turn it into a defeat or a victory,” the presidential advisor stressed. Marko Djuric (Tanjug, file) Beta
