BRUSSELS The European Commission (EC) is evaluating Serbia's efforts towards achieving European standards in a positive light, reads Catherine Ashton’s report. The EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy will submit to the EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday. “Serbia likely to get EU talks date in June” The drafting of the part of the report relating to the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is still underway, but Tanjug managed to obtain the part of the text relating to internal reforms in the judiciary, protection of human rights and media freedom. A generally positive tone prevails throughout the eight-page-long text, but special attention is paid to some of the problems that Serbia will have to tackle more seriously after starting the accession talks, which is expected as early as this year. In the chapter on the judiciary, experts of the Commission say that the Serbian government is committed to strengthening the rule of law, especially when it comes to judicial reform and the fight against corruption. The Commission positively evaluates recent amendments to the Criminal Code concerning the fight against corruption, which is the centerpiece of the government's policy sending a clear message of zero tolerance. In the chapter on media freedom, the Commission emphasizes the importance of a recently formed committee investigating the cases of murder of journalists. On the other hand, a very serious objection is sent to the media in Serbia, whose reports, the Commission says, are generally not analytical enough, being biased and subject to self-censorship. The report states that progress has been made in the field of rights of national minorities, especially Roma, and that the government has provided textbooks in the Albanian language for schools in southern Serbia.
