BELGRADE I expect the EU to make it clear to Pristina that it should give up on a request for Serbia not to block Kosovo’s UN membership, Mladjan Dinkic says. The finance minister told daily Danas that the request had not been mentioned in the previous rounds. “EU should exert pressure on Pristina” “There is no need for us to consult in Serbia, I hope the EU will exert pressure on the Pristina delegation and if they give up on the request, an agreement can be signed even today,” Dinkic pointed out. According to him, the Pristina delegation made a new request at the ninth round of the talks that Serbia stop blocking Kosovo’s membership in the international organizations, primarily in the UN, “which is unacceptable”. “If Pristina withdrew this point from the proposal, we would be very close to a historic agreement,” the minister stressed. “It is obvious that the biggest part of the Brussels proposal is far better for Serbia than what was on the table earlier. Everything is in accordance with what we can accept because compromises have been made. Kosovo’s UN membership is unacceptable to us and I expect Pristina to give up on it. I do not expect the EU to exert additional pressure on Serbia but only to make maximal compromises,” Dinkic was quoted as saying. When asked if the top Serbian officials would consult on the EU’s proposal or if they would just wait for Pristina’s answer, he said that “there is no point to discuss it because we will not accept Kosovo’s UN membership even if we do not get a date for the start of the EU accession talks”. He underscored that Serbia would not block Kosovo’s EU integration process because “all administrative borders will be erased if both Serbia and Kosovo become EU members” but reiterated that Serbia could not accept a UN seat for Kosovo. When asked if he expected Serbia to get a date for the start of the EU accession talks in June, Dinkic said that Serbia had shown a maximum of constructiveness and that it was important that the European Parliament’s report was positive. “We have passed the final test, meaning we have shown we are ready for an agreement with Pristina, so I hope that Serbia will get a date for the beginning of the negotiations in June,” he explained.
