NEW YORK U.S. diplomat James Wasserstrom has won a lawsuit he filed against the United Nations, his former employer in Kosovo. The outcome of the trial proved he was penalized for exposing corruption in electric power plants and mines which involved both local political leaders and UN officials. Ex-UN official in Kosovo wins lawsuit Even though he won the court case, Wasserstrom is not satisfied with the awarded damages of USD 65,000 - a mere two percent of what he was seeking. He asked U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to withhold 15 percent of its contribution to the UN budget as required by U.S. law, writes Reuters. Wasserstrom, now an anti-corruption officer at the U.S. embassy in Afghanistan, warned about cases of serious corruption, after which his office in Kosovo was shut down and his contract was not renewed, which he took as retaliation and sued the world organization. A tribunal last month found UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Ethics Office failed to properly review claims that he was retaliated against for reporting UN corruption in Kosovo. According to Reuters, an unnamed U.S. State Department official said the department does not believe any withholdings are required at this time, even though the United States is required by law to withhold 15 percent of its contribution to any UN agency which is not implementing "best practices for the protection of whistleblowers from retaliation." A UN spokesman declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation. Reuters Tanjug
