BELGRADE Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) deputy leader Igor Mirovic has reiterated that Vojvodina Executive Council Chairman Pojan Pajtic should resign. He also added that it was necessary to call early elections in the province and that the provincial authorities have lost their legitimacy. Elections in Vojvodina necessary, says SNS deputy leader “The provincial government is functioning in a formal vacuum because the Constitutional Court has disputed important regulations of the Law on the province’s powers. It is also assessing the constitutionality of the province’s Statute,” Mirovic told a press conference. He stressed that the provincial authorities had lost legitimacy due to “numerous abuses in funds”, adding that resources were almost completely exhausted. The SNS official noted that the SNS and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) had won the recently held local elections in Zajecar, Srbobran and Apatin which was a “final confirmation that the legitimacy of the current ruling majority in the Vojvodina assembly is completely lost”. “What else needs to happen aside from the lack of a formal framework, clear and visible abuses and clear expression of dissatisfaction in early elections in three constituencies before Vojvodina is swept by a wave of changes the citizens expect,” he wondered. Mirovic said that a debate on a possible dismissal of Pajtic and early provincial elections had been launched in the Vojvodina assembly several days ago. “This was an initial exchange of arguments because our request is general. It is not aimed at individuals or political parties but at changes that should provide progress to Vojvodina citizens,” he explained. The SNS deputy leader added that elections in the town of Kovin on April 7 would be another opportunity for citizens to express their opinion about the provincial authorities.
