BELGRADE The Fruska Gora National Park, located north of Belgrade, has been restored from the charge of the provincial to that of the Serbian government. An agreement to this effect was signed on Friday by Minister of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning Milan Bacevic and president of the Vojvodina provincial government, Bojan Pajtic. State authorities again in charge of Fruska Gora Park The representatives of the provincial and republic government reached an agreement on this matter quickly and easily after the recommendation of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Serbia according to which certain authorities over the Fruska Gora National Park should be restored to the Serbian government, Bacevic said. “This is our joint wealth and treasure and we want to nurture and develop it further,” Bacevic told reporters after signing the agreement. The forthcoming period will be an ideal opportunity to show that Fruska Gora should be available to all Serbian citizens who love nature and their country, Bacevic said. Fruska Gora also bears considerable religious importance as 16 Serbian Orthodox monasteries are situated within the national park, Bacevic said and noted that this is an additional reason why tourists should visit the park. The governments of Serbia and Vojvodina will continue providing financial assistance for the development of the Fruska Gora National Park, the minister said. Pajtic expressed gratitude to the minister for the state-building and responsible approach to the process of defining the agreement which will, as he said, open new perspectives for further development and investments in Fruska Gora. He noted that a year after the adoption of the new master plan, RSD 650 million have been invested in the park, mainly in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture and tourist centres. According to Pajtic, relevant bodies are preparing the documentation for the construction of the tunnel through Fruska Gora which would take off traffic pressure from the national park and connect Novi Sad with Ruma by means of a highway. Director of Fruska Gora National Park Public Company Dobrivoje Antonic said that the Master plan for the sustainable development of Fruska Gora in the period until 2022 envisages that an investment worth EUR 1,2 billion should be made in various areas so as to achieve revenues of EUR 1,4 billion. According to Antonic, the plan will ensure protection of natural, cultural, historic and geological values of Fruska Gora, as well as the development of forestry, fishing, hunting, agriculture, winemaking, fruit-growing and improvement of infrastructure which is at a rather low level at the moment. Fruska Gora was declared national park back in 1960 and it covers 25,500 hectares of land owned by nine municipalities. The national park is home to 1,500 species of plants, 50 species of mammals and a number of species of birds, butterflies, other insects and mushrooms.
