"Civil guard" mob lynches two men in Egypt The lynching was observed by a mass of about 3,000 angry people, some of whom shouted, "Kill them!" The murders happened a week after Egypt's state prosecutor's office, because of the deteriorating security situation and a police strike, encouraged civilians to arrest and extradite offenders to the police themselves. This is one of the most extreme actions in which the citizens took the law into their own hands since the security situation in the north African country deteriorate significatly after the popular uprising in 2011 - part of the so-called Arab Spring. The grisly scene reflects the chaotic conditions in Egypt today, where protests are spreading against a range of social, economic and political problems. The website of the state-run daily Al Ahram reported that the two men were dragged through the street after being caught trying to steal a rickshaw. They were brutally beaten, but were still alive at the time they were hanged by their feet. According to eyewitnesses, a girl who was kidnapped along with rickshaw was not injured. A photographer who witnessed the scene told the Associated Press that some people in the crowd threatened to kill him if he recorded the lynching. Among the spectators were women and children. The photographs depict two beaten men in their underwear hanging from a beam at the bus station. Other photographs show the victims lying dead on the ground with ropes around their ankles, their bodies covered with dirt and bruises, blood and wounds, and surrounded by a group of men with fierce expressions on their face. One of these men is holding a knife in one hand, and a bloodied wooden pole in another. Witnesses claimed that the crowd then took the bodies to a nearby police station and left them in front of the main entrance. Al Ahram said that the police "could not reach the location where the lynching took place", because the roads were blocked by a protest against the shortage of diesel. According to the security forces, the crowd "pushed away all who tried to help the two men." Bloody clashes are now expected to break out between the residents of Samanoda and a nearby village, from which the lynched men came. 24sata.rs
