NEW YORK The war in Iraq has so far cost the United States 1.7 trillion dollars, in addition to the 490 billion in benefits owed to war veterans. But this figure could grow to more than six trillion over the next four decades counting interest, the Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies said. Iraq war "could cost U.S. over six trillion dollars" A study, entitled "Costs of War Project", also found that the war caused the deaths of at least 134,000 Iraqi civilians and may have contributed to the deaths of as many as four times that number. The report, presented ahead of the 10th anniversary of the start of the invasion of Iraq, concluded that the United States gained little from the war while Iraq was "traumatized" by it, according to Reuters. The war "reinvigorated radical Islamist militants in the region, set back women's rights, and weakened an already precarious healthcare system", the news agency cited the survey. In 2003, the U.S. said the reason for the invasion was an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction held by the Iraqi authorities. However, American troops and their allies later said that no such weapons had been found. The figures published today were an update of a 2011 report that assessed the cost in dollars and lives from the wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, launched after the September 11 attacks. The previous survey showed that the combined financial cost was at least 3.7 trillion dollars. As for the loss of lives in the three wars - previously at 224,000 to 258,000, the estimated figure now ranges from 272,000 to 329,000.
