BERLIN Several hundreds of German police officers started raiding homes of radical Islamists – Salafists in several federal states on Wednesday. The operation is aimed at seizing materials and documents of the Islamic organization that has been banned by the German authorities. German police launch crackdown on radical Salafists “Salafism, as represented in the associations that were banned today, is incompatible with our free democratic order," Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said in a statement. Today’s police operation in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia should also help break up structures of banned groups DawaFFM and Islamische Audios, as well as An-Nussrah. According to German security services, the number of Salafists in Germany is rising. There were around 3,800 of them in 2011 while the number is now as high as 4,500. Radical Salafists last year handed out free copies of Koran in Berlin and several other German cities which caused criticism and warnings that it was a “dangerous propaganda of the extremist ideology”. “This is a Salafist propaganda and recruitment of new members. Koran is just an instrument here,” said Office for the Protection of the Constitution Spokesman Bodo Becker at the time. According to media, Kosovo Albanian Arid Uka, who killed two and seriously wounded another two U.S. servicemen at Frankfurt Airport in 2011, was a supporter of Salafists. Experts say that Salafists advocate the return to original Islam. Slafists claim that their beliefs represent original and pure Islam practiced by the first three generations of Muslims. They especially point out that they follow the Islamic monotheism called “towheed”. Slafist is a term that is today usually used to describe Wahhabis as well, both in Saudi Arabia and worldwide. Experts say that Salafists can usually be separated in two groups – those who believe that violence should be used to convert the infidels to Islam or to return supporters of other Islamic teachings to the original version of Islam and those who do not. The radical Islamic group is also known for using suicide attackers for their cause. (soos al7asan / Flickr) Tanjug
