Greens want parliament to debate GMOs declaration

BELGRADE The Green Party of Serbia on Monday demanded that their declaration for a GMOs-free Serbia be included on the agenda of the national parliament. The draft declaration advocates freedom of choice when it comes to food and gives total preference to traditional, controlled and organic production, reads the release issued by the party which has one seat in the parliament. The release recalls that the party has been advocating for a GMOs-free Serbia for the past three years and that it submitted the draft declaration to the parliament on February 5. Under the country's current legislation, production and trade of GMOs is illegal. However, some officials last year suggested that trade in such products should be allowed as a step toward fulfilling the criteria for Serbia's membership in the WTO.
