BELGRADE The EU will not tolerate “another” Cyprus and difficult issues will have to be solved before Serbia joins the Union, a German official has said. German parliament’s European Affairs Committee Chairman Gunther Krichbaum added that Germany was aware that reconciliation with neighbors took time and that it was sometimes a painful process for the entire society. EU will not accept “another Cyprus” Krichbaum noted that Serbia should not implement reforms for the sake of the EU but for the sake of its own people. “A stable political system, the rule of law and combat against corruption and organized crime are very important to investors. By making progress in these areas Serbia will help open new jobs. This is in Serbia’s hands,” he told daily Blic. Krichbaum reiterated that whether Serbia would get a date for the start of the EU accession talks in June depended on whether it fulfilled conditions defined in 2011, especially those concerning Kosovo. “This is why we rely on the assessment of the European Commission (EC) which will release a report on April 16 on whether there is a ‘sustainable and visible improvement of relations with Kosovo’,” he said and added that upcoming elections in Germany would not play a significant role in deciding on Serbia’s date for the start of the EU accession negotiations.
