Custody extended for former cabinet minister

The Appellate Court in Belgrade extended custody to Saša Dragin, former minister of agriculture, and five more persons.

BELGRADE The Appellate Court in Belgrade extended custody to Sasa Dragin, former minister of agriculture, and five more persons. The former minister from the ranks of the now opposition Democrats (DS) and others are suspected of illegal sale of subsidized mineral fertilizers at proposal of the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office. They have been in custody since November 24 when they were arrested on the order of the Prosecutor's Office, and as Radisavljevic puts it, the custody can last up to three months according to a decision of the Appellate Court. The suspects are charged with abuse of office, which may be penalized with two to 12 years in prison, and giving and taking bribe, which entails a sentence of three months to 12 years. They are charged with a number of irregularities regarding subsidized mineral fertilizers in 2009 and 2010, which according to the Serbian government's provisions was intended for agricultural households, cooperatives and companies involved in agricultural production whose shares are owned by the state. This has been confirmed for Tanjug by Organized Crime Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljević.

They have been in custody since November 24 when they were arrested on the order of the Prosecutor's Office, and as Radisavljević puts it, the custody can last up to three months according to a decision of the Appellate Court.
