BELGRADE UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic is hoping to replace Ban Ki-moon as the UN secretary general, daily Blic writes. According to the daily, Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak also stands a good chance of becoming a new UN secretary general. Daily: Jeremic in race for new UN secretary general Blic writes that Jeremic, who has already started to lobby for his cause, could have support of Russia and China but that the U.S. is strongly against him. A U.S. diplomat who wished to remain anonymous told Blic that the next secretary general should come from Eastern Europe. “Russia will probably propose their own candidate in the first round, while the U.S. candidate will be from some of the Baltic countries. Then, in the second round, the U.S. could nominate a Pole and Russia could propose Jeremic. Since the U.S. would not even hear about Jeremic, a compromise could be a Czech or a Slovak,” he was quoted as saying. Ban’s five-year-mandate will expire in December 2016. The next UN secretary general is expected to come from Eastern Europe bearing in mind the rules of rotation of six UN regional groups. Vuk Jeremic (FoNet, file) Blic Tanjug
