BELGRADE A meeting between Serbia and Kosovo’s President Tomislav Nikolic and Atifete Jahjaga was symbolic, New Policy Center NGO Director Vladimir Todoric says. “The meeting was short. There were not many reasons for them to stay any longer, it was symbolic, to have their pictures taken and to say that the new thing is that the presidents are having meetings but we should not give it importance because representatives of Kosovo and Serbia met in Vienna, the two PMs are now meeting,” he said. Nikolic-Jahjaga meeting was symbolic, analyst says Todoric told B92 that “Israel and Palestine have been talking for decades and yet there is no recognition”. “We should not look for some special importance but the moment when this is happening is interesting, just like Nikolic’s participation in the dialogue is a new moment. We have a serious discrediting of the prime minister and this meeting was scheduled before the affairs regarding Darko Saric’s drug gang,” he noted, adding that “if the EU is planning on getting out some new concessions from the PM, it will be difficult and Nikolic’s statement indicate that he will not make it any easier for them”. Todoric added that he believed that the EU had not planned one of the aspects of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue very well. “The EU’s approach has not been well-planned, they think that Belgrade gas an unlimited influence on the Serbs in the north. Just like there is no single government in Pristina that can call on Albanians in Presevo to be loyal citizens of Serbia, it works the same on the other side. That’s the catch that the EU forgot about,” he explained. According to him, the majority of the EU member states believe that Serbia should have gotten a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks in December. “But the most powerful ones believe that parallel institutions should be abolished, i.e. their financing. I think that is a condition that could lead Serbs to move out,” Todoric pointed out. Jahjaga said that the meeting with the Serbian president was constructive and that it was a meeting between “presidents of two sovereign and independent countries”. Nikolic noted after the meeting that he had told Jahjaga that the dialogue would not result in a solution if she kept insisting that Kosovo was an independent state. Todorić told B92 that “Israel and Palestine have been talking for decades and yet there is no recognition”.

“We should not look for some special importance but the moment when this is happening is interesting, just like Nikolić’s participation in the dialogue is a new moment. We have a serious discrediting of the prime minister and this meeting was scheduled before the affairs regarding Darko Šarić’s drug gang,” he noted, adding that “if the EU is planning on getting out some new concessions from the PM, it will be difficult and Nikolić’s statement indicate that he will not make it any easier for them”.

Todorić added that he believed that the EU had not planned one of the aspects of the Belgrade-Priština dialogue very well.

“The EU’s approach has not been well-planned, they think that Belgrade gas an unlimited influence on the Serbs in the north. Just like there is no single government in Priština that can call on Albanians in Preševo to be loyal citizens of Serbia, it works the same on the other side. That’s the catch that the EU forgot about,” he explained.
