BRUSSELS European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur Tanja Fajon says it is not true that “full political agreement on a mechanism for reintroduction of visas” has been reached. Commenting on a Beta news agency report, Fajon said that there was no meeting of EP Civil Liberties Committee in Brussels. “Still no decision on reintroduction of visas” “Therefore, there were no talks about the visa regime and certainly no decision. There is no voting that has been announced. That is wrong information. There is nothing new. The negotiations will continue,” she told Sarajevo-based daily Dnevni avaz. According to the daily, a package of five or six amendments, including the one on a safeguard clause due to great numbers of false asylum seekers, has been waiting for adoption in the EP for two years. Dnevni avaz writes that the regulation regarding possible reintroduction of visas for the Western Balkan countries is not as disputable as Czech Republic and Hungary’s request to introduce visas for Canadian citizens as a reciprocal measure. “As long as amendments on reciprocity and suspension clause are in the same package, it will be very difficult to reach any kind of agreement. Let us add that the EP strongly opposes the introduction of visas for the Western Balkan countries,” the daily noted. Fajon told B92 earlier that she did not believe that visas would be reintroduced for the Western Balkan countries but Beta news agency reported just a day later that an agreement on the mechanism for reintroduction of visas had been reached and that MEPs would vote on it by the end of January. Belgrade-based daily Vecernje novosti reported several days earlier that the negotiations about the reintroduction of visas for Serbian citizens “have become so complicated that they will be postponed”.
