BELGRADE PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic warned on Thursday that a "medium-sized town had disappeared" in traffic accidents in Serbia over the past two decades. "It is the duty of the competent ministries, as well as NGOs, to do everything to improve traffic safety and save each life," said Dacic. Number of road crash victims "equals population of one town" "It is our job to fight to save every human life. Saving a life is the greatest result of our work," Dacic said at a celebration of the day of the Road Traffic Safety Agency. He noted that 1.3 million people were killed annually across the world in traffic accidents, which exceeds the death toll of natural disasters and wars, and that 700 people died in traffic accidents in Serbia last year. Dacic said that the citizens "should not be annoyed " by traffic police checks or traffic cameras, because they were a way to save lives. The prime minister also explained that a majority of all accidents were caused by "the human factor" - most by speeding - and that "education of those participating in traffic was directly related to the number of crashes".
