BELGRADE Serbia will persuade all EU member states that it deserves a date for the start of the accession negotiations, believes Austrian FM Michael Spindelegger. He told daily Danas that he “advocated a much more ambitious formulation” at the European Council meeting in Brussels but that “it was unfortunately impossible to achieve it this time”. "Serbia will persuade EU it deserves talks date by June" “Still, you have to bear in mind that not much time has passed since the work of the new government in Belgrade was intensified, especially in the dialogue with Pristina. Therefore, the EU wants to see continuation of progress before it sets a date for the beginning of the accession negotiations. I am convinced that Serbia will persuade all EU member states that it deserves it by June 2013,” the Austrian official says. He confirmed that his country was one of the strongest proponents of an idea that Serbia deserved to get a date for the beginning of the EU talks as soon as possible. According to him, Vienna will continue to support the Serbian government’s pro-European course. “I am very glad that the Council made another step forward in Serbia’s EU integration. I could see for myself during my visit to Belgrade two weeks ago positive steps Serbia has taken in the last several months and I strongly supported opening of doors to Serbia on its EU pathway at the Council meeting,” Spindelegger concluded.
