BELGRADE Aleksandar Vulin said on Tuesday in Belgrade that a date had not yet been set for posting liaison officers between Belgrade and Pristina. The head of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo and Metohija was commenting on the claims of Belgrade media that liaison officers would be posted by the end of December. Vulin: No date set for posting liaison officers "The dates have not been set yet, it is possible appointments will be made. Whether this will start functioning in the sense of liaison officers is a matter that depends not only on Belgrade and Pristina, but also on the EU, under whose auspices this will function," said Vulin. He added the public had no reason to worry that liaison officer would in fact be ambassadors. "The (ethnic) Albanian side tried to present this to their public as cooperation at the level of ambassadors, and we can understand this as their political attempt to make the negotiations easier for themselves. The truth is they will be liaison officers, not ambassadors," explained Vulin, adding they would not have diplomatic immunity and status, and would work with the EU Mission. "It is reasonable to expect they might have an office at the EU Mission. But it is certain that Pristina will not have an office in Belgrade or Belgrade in Pristina," said Vulin. He said the confusion might have been caused by the claim that Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci would send "his ambassador". "He can send anyone and call him whatever he wants, but for someone to be an ambassador, he must be accredited in the host country, which we of course will not do, nor will we ask something like this from our liaison officer in Pristina," said Vulin. Liaison officers will monitor events on the ground, make sure the agreements between Belgrade and Pristina are implemented and point out any violations, highlight any issues of interests to either side and they should be "people with a good phonebook," concluded Vulin.
