BRUSSELS Serbia's Ambassador to NATO Branislav Milinkovic died tragically in Brussels on Wednesday at the age of 52, the Foreign Ministry has released. Media have reported that Milinkovic committed suicide. Serbian ambassador to NATO commits suicide According to Belgrade media, the ambassador committed suicide by jumping from a parking lot at Brussels international airport. The tragedy was witnessed by Serbia’s Assistant Foreign Minister Zoran Vujic. Milinkovic’s wife was in Dublin when she received the news and she immediately went to Brussels. He is also survived by a six-year-old son. A diplomat told AP that Milinkovic was chatting and joking with colleagues in a multi-story parking garage at Brussels Airport when he suddenly strolled to a barrier, climbed over and flung himself to the ground below. By the time his shocked colleagues reached him, the ambassador was dead. Three diplomats, Milinkovic’s colleagues told AP he did not appear distraught in the hours leading up to his death Tuesday night. He seemed to be going about his regular business, picking up an arriving delegation of six Serbian officials who were due to hold talks with NATO. Milinkovic was a distinguished diplomat and jurist. He served in Vienna and Brussels. His colleagues will remember him as an excellent diplomat, a leading intellectual and a noble man, the statement reads. “NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen is sorry and he said the news of the tragic death of the Serbian ambassador had upset him. Ambassador Branislav Milinkovic was an extremely respected representative of his country and we will miss him at the NATO headquarters,” said NATO Spokeswoman Carmen Romero. Serbian PM Ivica Dacic sent his condolences to Milinkovic’s family and friends on Wednesday. “Belgian police are investigating the case but it was apparently a suicide,” Dacic told reporters. Milinkovic was appointed extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to NATO on August 3, 2009. He was a special envoy of Serbia and Montenegro’s foreign minister to NATO in 2004. Prior to that Milinkovic was a permanent representative of Serbia in OSCE and UN missions.
