The suspect was "most likely under the influence of alcohol" at the time of the incident, according to reports which quoted the police. The police in the Macedonian capital explained that the firebomb landed some 50 meters from the embassy's gates, shortly before midnight on Friday. The attacker "left the scene on foot", it has been reported. He was arrested a while later, after crashing his car into another vehicle in a street nearby.
