BELGRADE The cooperation with the Hague Tribunal will be reduced to the lowest possible technical level that will not cause new harm to the country, says Rasim Ljajic. “After a scandalous acquittal of (Croat Generals) Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, the court showed its unjust face,” the National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal head told daily Vecernje novosti. “Downgraded ties with Hague Tribunal won’t hurt Serbia” He said that Serbia, despite the great injustice it suffered, could not completely cut its ties with the Tribunal. “The state is not in a position to make such a radical move. That is why we will just continue to submit the necessary documents to the prosecution and to defense teams of our indictees,” Ljajic was quoted as saying. He noted that the Hague Tribunal “can forget about all joint conferences, round tables, educational programs about facing the past, debates and lectures”. “This is not going to happen. They can just forget about those things. Still, it is important to remain sober-minded and not worsen our position that is not easy anyway with hasty moves. It is important not to hurt our indictees in The Hague and that they get documents for their defense on time. We will continue to submit documents to the prosecution in accordance with requests, which is our legal obligation,” he explained. Ljajic said that Serbia had basically completed its cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and that it did not have any more requests from Serbia, aside from certain documents. “Helpers of former fugitives are not on the agenda. Requests to search for them practically do not exist. This cannot be a new condition for Serbia and it cannot represent a political pressure on our country,” he concluded.
