NEW YORK I wish to send a message of solidarity and support to journalists and their associations, UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic has said in a release. “I also call on all UN member states to make additional effort to discover and punish perpetrators of attacks against journalists,” he added on the International Day to End Impunity. UNGA president calls for protection of journalists “I would like to use this opportunity to draw attention to the fact that, according to the International Institute for Journalism’s research, an infamous record of 119 journalists killed in the line of duty was set this year. A significant number of the attacks was left unsolved which can only encourage new attacks on the freedom of media. I therefore call for respect of conclusions of the International Conference for Protection of Journalists in Dangerous Situations that was held in January in Qatar,” Jeremic stressed. “The right to information is inalienable in a democratic society and I deeply believe that all those who work in the interest of public debates, revelation of the truth and informing the citizens deserve maximum support and protection of the state and the international institutions,” the UNGA president said. “In that sense I wish to support all initiatives that stand up to impunity of those who threaten and attack journalists, including foundation and future work of the International Commission for Investigating the Killings of Journalists in Serbia,” he added. “As a (UN) General Assembly president, I will continue to work closely with member states and associations of journalists in order to pay special attention to the issue in the UN system and support activities aimed at increasing standards of protection of those who work in the media, both journalists and technical staff. I am convinced that the EU should give its full support to initiatives aimed at protecting and investigating murders of media employees in both peace and war,” Jeremic pointed out.
