BELGRADE The Serbian parliament’s Finance Committee will reconsider the proposed amendments to the Law on the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) on Friday. The Committee was supposed to hold a meeting on Thursday but it did not due to lack of quorum. Finance Committee to debate amendments to NBS law A heated controversy took place in the parliament building over the proposed amendments Thursday, as opposition parties criticized the proposals saying that they are not enough to meet the objections put forward by the EU three months ago, when the parliament adopted the previous amendments to the Law on the NBS. “The Democratic Party (DS) will not support the draft amendments to the law as the proposals are not grappling with the essence of the problem - the politicization of the NBS, which came about by the appointment of Jorgovanka Tabakovic, a senior official in the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), as NBS governor,” DS MP Bozidar Djelic said during Thursday's session of the committee. He said that the proposed amendments were therefore "just makeup" and a bad message when it came to macroeconomic stability and investment in the country. “The way in which the law is being adopted is degrading to the Serbian parliament,” Djelic noted and added that the proposed amendments were “nothing but the self-same points that were revoked by the previous amendments.” Tabakovic said that the remarks by the international financial institutions were justified and that they had been made due to "translation errors" and would be cancelled by the adoption of the suggested amendments. She specified that the mistake had been caused by a wrong translation of the word “responsibility”, which had been seen to mean subjection to control and supervision outside Serbia, while being interpreted as accountability in Serbia. “Another reason was the NBS Statute, as it was taken outside Serbia that under the amended law, the governor needs to seek parliament's permission before adopting decisions,” she added. The NBS governor said that she was satisfied that excellent cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank had been established concerning these dilemmas. Replying to Djelic's remarks regarding her being an SNS official, Tabakovic said that she had frozen her membership and functions in the party. (Beta, file) Tanjug

A heated controversy took place in the parliament building over the proposed amendments Thursday, as opposition parties criticized the proposals saying that they are not enough to meet the objections put forward by the EU three months ago, when the parliament adopted the previous amendments to the Law on the NBS.

“The Democratic Party (DS) will not support the draft amendments to the law as the proposals are not grappling with the essence of the problem - the politicization of the NBS, which came about by the appointment of Jorgovanka Tabaković, a senior official in the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), as NBS governor,” DS MP Božidar Đelić said during Thursday's session of the committee.

He said that the proposed amendments were therefore "just makeup" and a bad message when it came to macroeconomic stability and investment in the country.
