Govt. prepares plan to curb number of asylum seekers He explained that Germany would at Belgrade’s request place Serbia on the so-called safe-country list and that it was expected that other EU member states would do the same. This means that Serbian citizens will not be able to seek asylum due to political persecution and they will be automatically deported, the daily writes. According to Banovic, the Commission has in cooperation with the Transportation Ministry adopted a measure aimed at stricter control of permits for international transport to transportation companies. The measures also include intensified bilateral cooperation with European partners that receive the highest number of asylum applications and the government has requested from the EU member states to shorten the asylum procedure. Almost 32,000 Serbian citizens requested asylum in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg but only one percent of them received asylum.
