Muslims start Kurban Bayram celebrations

Muslims started celebrating the first day of one of the biggest Islamic holidays, Kurban Bayram, with morning prayers in mosques across Serbia on Friday.

BELGRADE Muslims started celebrating the first day of one of the biggest Islamic holidays, Kurban Bayram, with morning prayers in mosques across Serbia on Friday. Islamic Community of Serbia’s Mufti Muhamed Jusufspahic held a morning prayer in Belgrade's Bajrakli Mosque. Muslims start Kurban Bayram celebrations After the prayer, he said that he was thankful that Muslims in Serbia were free and expressed hope that Serbia enjoyed having its Muslims as well. The mufti said that it was a “God’s blessing” for Muslims when they celebrated Kurban Bayram with their brothers from the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), Jewish Community and other religious communities. Jusufspahic added that many people had gathered at the Bajrakli Mosque and that the prayer was held in 17 more municipalities. He announced that the issue of a Muslim cemetery in Belgrade would soon be resolved with the city authorities and that the Islamic Community of Serbia would get a lot at every Belgrade cemetery. Belgrade City Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Antic attended the celebration and once again extended his greetings to all Muslims in Serbia. He expressed satisfaction over the fact that he had an opportunity to extend his Kurban Bayram greetings to “our friends Muslims”. After the morning prayer, Antic wished all Serbian citizens to live in peace and prosperity and said that it was excellent that numerous citizens of Belgrade had come to the mosque regardless of their religion. The Islamic Community in Serbia headed by Mufti Muamer Zukorlic held a central holiday celebration in Novi Pazar. Due to differences in determining the first day of the holiday between Saudi Arabia and Turkey, Muslims in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia and Croatia mark the first day of Kurban Bayram today while believers in Turkey, Macedonia and Albania started their holiday celebrations on October 25. Religious leaders and politicians both from Serbia and region have sent their Kurban Bayram greetings.
