BELGRADE Serbia will propose its EU partners to shorten their asylum procedures in order to solve the issue of false asylum seekers. Serbian Border Police Chief Nenad Banovic told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) that he was optimistic that such measures would help solve the problem. Serbia to propose to EU states to shorten asylum procedure Serbia’s Deputy PM Ivica Dacic ordered at a meeting with a commission set up to monitor the visa-free arrangement with the EU on Wednesday that emergency measures be taken in order to reduce the number of false asylum seekers. Banovic stressed that the proposals would be presented in meetings with representatives of Germany and other EU member states next week and added that similar problems had been solved with Luxembourg and Belgium. “We had 925 persons from Serbia who requested asylum in Luxembourg in 2011 while there were only 300 in the first ten months of this year. Also, there were 877 (asylum seekers) in the first nine months last year in Belgium and there are around 460 our citizens now. These two countries have shortened the period for approval of asylum and reduced the social welfare,” he explained. Banovic said that the Serbian authorities would propose Germany to do the same. He added that it would maybe be impossible to cut the welfare amount due to the Constitutional Court’s decision but that Germany could place Serbia on the so-called “list of safe third countries” and shorten the asylum procedure from three months to 15 days. He pointed out that Serbia conducted readmission of citizens sent back from EU member states and that control at borders would be stricter for those who would reattempt to cross the border and apply for asylum.
