BELGRADE If Pristina suggests Hashim Thaci as head of its team for talks with Belgrade, Serbia "will have to face it", a European Parliament special rapporteur says. Eduard Kukan told Tanjug news agency in an interview that recognizing Kosovo "is not a requirement for Serbia's EU integration at this moment". "If Pristina suggests Thaci, Belgrade has to face it" "There is no official document asking that," Kukan explained, adding that the European Commission report on progress would not contain it either, and that "currently the requirement was normalization of the relations with Kosovo". Kukan stated that it was "up to Belgrade and Pristina to decide what was at the end of that path". The expression "normalization of the relations with Kosovo" will be clearer after the European Commission report, according to him. He did not wish to speculate on the issue and said it would be "best to wait for the report". "The report will reflect the political situation in Serbia, he noted, adding that not much oculd be expected for objective reasons. Serbia had elections, a campaign, formed the government and parliament this year, and that is all lost time in terms of EU integration," he explained. "The continuation of the talks between Belgrade and Pristina on the political level is an important step and Serbia will have to face it if Thaci is picked as negotiator," Kukan pointed out. "The European Parliament has always supported EU enlargement," said Kukan. "The parliament is always more active that the commission, he stated. the European Commission needs more time to make a decision or recommend something and the parliament usually uses positive pressure to help the countries aspiring to become EU members," he noted.
