BELGRADE Serbian Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic has announced that it would be known on October 15 which towns will see the reintroduction of basic courts. A draft Law on the Court Network will be prepared by that day, Selakovic told B92 TV late on Friday in Belgrade, and explained: Minister talks "setting justice system anomalies right" "This will not be a new network of courts. We are only setting anomalies right. There used to be 138 basic courts, now there are 34. It does not make sense to, for instance, have only one court in the Srem District, which has a population of 315,000." The minister added that his assistant at the ministry Vojkan Simic was "only one member of the working group dealing with basic courts", while others included Vida Petrovic-Skero, Miroljub Tomic, and others. Asked whether there was reason to suspect that "politics will meddle" when the Constitutional Court makes its decision regarding the appointment of High Court of Cassation and High Judicial Council head Nata Mesarovic, Selakovic stressed that "there is no space for political purges". This is the case, he added, because the Constitutional Court is absolutely independent in carrying out its jurisdiction. "It is indicative that this initiative is two years old," the minister conceded. He also asserted that "he can guarantee" that the trial of Goran Knezevic is taking place without political pressures. Knezevic, formerly of the Democratic Party (DS), now a member of the Serb Progressives (SNS), is Serbia's agriculture minister and MP. He was several years ago charged with financial fraud, allegedly committed while he served as mayor of the town of Zrenjanin. "It will be without political pressures, he said it himself he would not invoke his immunity. It is also well-known what witnesses had stated," Selakovic concluded.
