France expels 240 Roma immigrants According to BBC, about 240 east European Roma were put on a flight to Bucharest after agreeing to return to Romania voluntarily. Two camps near Lille were closed on Thursday morning, following similar moves in Paris and the Lyon area. France’s Interior Minister Manuel Valls said in a statement on Wednesday that court orders to remove illegal camps would be executed "with firmness". “Unsanitary camps are unacceptable,” he said. Critics say the Socialists are copying the mass clearances under conservative ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy. Despite criticism of having a racist attitude toward Roma, Sarkozy ordered two years ago that half of illegal Roma camps in France be closed. A French police officer shot to death a young Roma man who was running away from the police days before Sarkozy’s decision. Riots followed soon after and a group of Roma attacked a police station. Sarkozy called for “stiff punishments” for those responsible and ordered that all illegal Roma, who mostly came from Eastern Europe, be deported. He also called for the changes to the Law on Immigrants aimed at speeding up the deportation process, which was, as he put it, “in the interest of public order”. According to BBC, about 240 east European Roma were put on a flight to Bucharest after agreeing to return to Romania voluntarily.
