BELGRADE Rasim Ljajic says his Social-Democratic Party of Serbia (SDPS) would leave the government if the ruling coalition tried to change the authorities in Belgrade. He told daily Blic that he had made a “big mistake” when he asked for the approval of the Democratic Party (DS) to join the new government. SDPS leader on participation in new government “The DS is our strategic partner and whoever runs the party it is the closest us when it comes to political and ideological ideas. I hope that as the time goes by, the decision on our joining the government will not affect our future relations,” Ljajic said. He added that he had gotten an offer from the Socialists and Progressives he “could not even dream of getting from the Democrats” but that he had accepted the offer “for the sake of the SDPS’ survival which is a young and new party”. When asked whether one of his condition was not to topple the Belgrade city authorities, he said that this was not a part of the coalition agreement. “I have to say that this was not a part of the coalition agreement but we would not be happy if the current ruling coalition started toppling the authorities in Belgrade. I do now know how we could stay in the government if this happened. We are in the coalition with the DS in Belgrade and it would be irrational if someone destroyed it,” the SDPS leader stressed. He added that his party “would in that case leave the government that very second”. Ljajic will be an internal and foreign trade, telecommunications and information society minister in the new government. Party of Democratic Action of Sandzak (SDA) leader Sulejman Ugljanin will also be a part of the new government. Even though the DS Presidency decided that its official Milica Delevic and Ljajic should not join the future government, DS deputy leader Dragan Djilas was of the opinion that they should do it “because it would be good for the country”, the daily writes. According to the daily, DS deputy leader Jelena Trivan backed Djilas’ stance while Dragoljub Micunovic, Marko Djurisic and Bojan Pajtic were against it. Rasim Ljajic (Beta, file) Blic Tanjug
